The pain of a rising electricity bill and the Remedy at Hand
The sun powers your home all day, but the moment you need that energy most, you’re forced back onto expensive grid power. And even though a home battery is the best option, this dream feels financially out of reach because of the upfront cost of solar batteries and the complexity of battery installation.
Until now.
What if you could get a home battery storage system for a much lower price?
You can now upgrade your home to a self-reliant energy hub, and that too with massive discounts through the new federal rebate program, which makes investing in a battery energy storage system worthwhile.
This blog will walk you through precisely what the federal rebates are, how you can apply them to your solar battery installation, why Solar Paradigm is uniquely positioned to help NSW homes, and what to look out for from battery brands, as well as the steps to get your system installed.
What is a Battery System & How It Integrates with Your Solar System
A solar battery system is the heart of a modern energy-smart home. When you already have solar panels on your roof, what you’re missing is the ability to store that solar PV power for use when the sun isn’t shining. The battery energy storage system stores excess solar output, and when your panels stop generating — say, at dusk — the system can draw on the stored energy rather than the grid.
Why is this so important for NSW Homes?
Many homes in New South Wales have invested in solar panels but still rely strongly on grid electricity. The result is that while you might be producing 5 kW or 10 kW of solar on a sunny day, come evening, your home reverts to grid power, paying high peak tariffs.
With a well-sized battery system, you close that loop: your solar PV generates, your battery stores, and you use. That efficiency reduces your electricity bill, improves the self-consumption of your solar, and gives you energy resilience.
Battery vs Solar only
A solar-only setup is great for daylight hours but leaves evenings open and still reliant on the grid. A solar-plus-battery setup moves you toward energy independence. Instead of exporting excess and buying at night, you use what you generate at times when required. With battery management software and a hybrid inverter tuned for efficiency, your system can even respond automatically (e.g., charge during midday and discharge during the evening peak).
The Federal Rebate

The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program is an expansion of the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Under this program, households and small businesses can access a 30% on the upfront cost of installing a solar battery system. A quick call with us and we’ll give you all the required details and eligibility.
Battery systems must have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. However, only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity can generate STCs. If you’re retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system, the solar system must comply with safety and regulatory requirements. We make sure the installation complies with state/territory electrical safety laws, including Certificate of Electrical Compliance (or equivalent), and the installer must hold accreditation under Solar Accreditation Australia.
Amount of the rebate, and what are the savings?
- Estimates suggest the rebate is worth up to $372 per usable kWh of battery capacity. In practice, the net discount is roughly $330 per usable kWh after administrative fees.
For example, for a 10 kWh usable home battery, the discount could be around $3,300. The discount is planned to gradually reduce each year until 2030, aligning with falling battery costs.
STCs Are Reducing in 2026
- From 1 January 2026, the deeming period for all small-scale systems under the SRES will be reduced by one year. So, Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) available for eligible products will be comparatively lesser.
- For batteries specifically, the STC rate will drop from 9.3 to 8.4 STCs per usable kWh (only the first 50 kWh qualify). This reduction will slightly decrease the rebate value from 2026 onward. Accurate documentation is essential, as improperly created STCs may be rejected under the Renewable Energy Act.
A typical solar and battery combo that might have cost $12,000+ may now effectively cost around $8,000 or less (depending on size, state rebates, roof orientation, installer labour, etc). The rebate alone makes the financial case for battery installation far stronger.
How it intertwines with other incentives
Because this is a federal rebate, it can often be stacked with state government incentives or solar feed-in tariffs. For NSW Homes, even if your state’s rebate programs may shift, the federal scheme ensures a baseline incentive. Furthermore, the rebate is delivered through the SRES framework, which also governs solar-PV STCs, so if you’re adding a battery to an existing solar system, you may benefit from both the solar side and the battery side.
Common Concerns NSW Homeowners Have
Before choosing a solar battery system, most homeowners come to us with the same worries:
- “I want this specific battery brand. But will it even fit my space?”
- “What if the battery doesn’t work with my existing solar inverter?”
- “Will adding a battery affect my current warranty or approvals?”
- “Is my switchboard too old?”
- “What if the installer says my wall can’t hold the battery weight?”
These concerns are completely normal. Battery systems vary in size, weight, ventilation needs and wall-mounting requirements. We, as the best in the market, assess whether it fits your space, your system, and your home’s electrical setup, and then recommend the right alternative without compromising performance or rebate eligibility.
Solar Paradigm: Your Trusted NSW Solar & Battery Installer
In a market crowded with solar and battery installers, what sets us at Solar Paradigm apart when it comes to solar battery installation? Here’s how we stand out and why NSW Homes can confidently choose us for the upgrade.
We’re accredited experts
We are fully accredited under the essential frameworks: our team holds the required installer credentials (including battery installation accreditation via Solar Accreditation Australia), we work with battery systems and hybrid inverters listed by the Clean Energy Council, and we follow Australian Standards for installation. We use approved products that follow the compliance path, so you qualify for rebates without risk of denial.
Years of experience & specialist knowledge
When it comes to designing and delivering hybrid systems (solar, battery, hybrid inverter, and battery management) for NSW homes, we’ve logged many projects. We know how to match a solar PV array to a home’s demand, design a battery size for optimum stored energy use, select the right hybrid inverter (single phase or three phase, depending on your home), and ensure everything works seamlessly with your existing solar panels and grid connection. This depth of experience means fewer headaches for you and a smoother path to usable savings.
Full-service from assessment to installation to support
- We begin with a detailed energy-usage assessment: solar generation data, your household load profile, evening usage, peak times, and whether you’re on single-phase or three-phase.
- We design the solar and battery system to maximise self-consumption, minimise grid draw, and optimise your return on investment.
- We handle all regulatory compliance: we ensure the battery and inverter are CEC-approved, handle documentation, supervise installation, provide the Certificate of Electrical Compliance, and guide you on rebate eligibility so you get the discount properly.
- We commission the system, activate monitoring, optimise battery management settings, and walk you through using your system effectively (not every installer does).
- After installation, we provide ongoing support for warranty, system monitoring, and firmware updates for hybrid inverter/battery management software.
Customised solutions for NSW homes
We recognise that NSW homes are diverse — single-storey, double-storey, new builds, heritage homes, homes with existing solar, homes without yet. We customise solutions accordingly: if you already have solar panels (say 5 kW), we assess if the existing system is battery-ready and whether adding a battery retrofit is economical. If you don’t yet have panels, we design a combined solar PV + battery energy storage system from scratch. Because we know the NSW market, we know local grid conditions, tariffs, net-metering rules, and local council zoning, and we optimise accordingly.
Transparent cost-benefit and no hype
We don’t use inflated promises or clichés (“become fully off-grid overnight”). We provide an honest cost-benefit analysis: what your electricity bill is now, what your projected savings are with stored energy, and the payback timeframe. We clearly explain the hybrid inverter, the battery system, the solar panels, the grid battery functionality, and how your battery management will be set up. We’ll help you understand the ongoing benefits, too.
Why now
With the federal rebate programme now in effect and qualifications locked in, early adopters benefit from the 30% discount on battery systems before the value gradually declines. By partnering with us at Solar Paradigm now, you can ensure you’re ahead of the rush, get access to quality systems, and be confident you’re fully eligible. As the industry scales, quality installers will be in high demand; we ensure you have priority, dependable delivery and full compliance.
What to Look For — Brands, Hybrid Inverters, & Quality
When you’re investing in a solar battery installation, the quality of the products and the way the system is designed matter just as much as the installation itself.
At Solar Paradigm, we partner only with trusted, high-quality battery brands, including Sungrow, GoodWe, Sigenergy, SAJ, HyxiPower, Fox ESS and Pylontech, all compliant with Australian Standards and proven for long-term performance. Think of it as your own curated menu of top-tier batteries, and we help you choose the one that fits your home, lifestyle and future energy plans perfectly.
These reliable brands have strong warranties, stable software, and integrated battery management so your system operates efficiently from day one.
The hybrid inverter is the centre of the entire setup, linking your solar PV, battery system, and the grid. We design the system architecture so your battery charges smoothly from daytime excess, delivers stored energy during the evening, and gives you complete visibility through real-time monitoring. This ensures you’re using your stored energy intelligently rather than relying on the grid when tariffs are high.
Proper battery placement, correct cabling, ventilation, system commissioning, Certificates of Electrical Compliance, and all required documents under the federal program, we take care of all of this on your behalf. You never have to worry about whether your system is “rebate-ready”. We ensure it is.
The final piece is system sizing. We design your system so it’s neither oversized nor undersized, balancing performance, stored energy, and long-term return. Our modelling is rooted in your actual consumption and focused on delivering measurable savings and energy autonomy, not inflated promises. With the right design and products, your system remains efficient and supported for years to come.

FAQs
1. Do I need to install new solar panels to qualify for the battery rebate?
No. You can install a battery with an existing solar PV system that’s installed correctly.
2. Will my payback really be good?
Yes. The rebate reduces your upfront costs, accelerating payback. A properly designed system often delivers strong returns, especially if you shift loads and maximise the use of stored energy.
3. Does the battery make me completely off-grid?
Not necessarily, and you should be realistic. Most home systems are still grid-connected. The goal is to reduce grid reliance and electric bills, not necessarily eliminate grid use entirely (though in some homes it might be possible). The value is in stored energy and self-consumption.
4. Is a battery only useful when the sun is out?
No. The value of a battery is in storing the solar PV energy during the daytime and using it when you need it (evening/night). Proper battery management is key.
5. Is the rebate permanent or will it change?
The rebate value will gradually reduce over time until 2030, as battery costs fall. So acting sooner rather than later is beneficial.
