NSW Home Energy Saver Loan: 0% Interest for Solar and Batteries

Last updated: 20 August 2026 | Estimated reading time: 11 minutes

The upfront cost of solar panels or a home battery can stop a good energy upgrade before it starts. The NSW Home Energy Saver Loan changes that equation for eligible households by offering up to $15,000 at 0% interest for approved home energy upgrades, including rooftop solar and residential batteries.

Applications for the loan are open. The loan is funded by the NSW Government and delivered by participating finance providers in Brighte and Plenti. It remains a loan, not a grant, so you must repay the amount borrowed and pass the provider’s eligibility and credit assessment.

Quick answer: Eligible NSW homeowners and landlords may apply for a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000, repayable over up to 10 years, for approved solar, battery and other energy-saving upgrades. Finance approval, program rules and approved supplier requirements apply.

What is the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan?

The Home Energy Saver Loan is a NSW Government-funded finance program intended to reduce the upfront barrier to energy-saving home improvements. Under the current offer, an eligible household can borrow up to $15,000 at zero interest and repay it over a term of up to 10 years.

The distinction between funding and lending matters. The NSW Government funds the program, while Brighte and Plenti receive applications, assess credit, approve loans, manage repayments and maintain the loan account.

A zero-interest loan can make an upgrade easier to budget for, but it is not free money. You repay the principal, must make repayments on time and should read the lender’s contract for late fees, repayment frequency, hardship support and early repayment terms.

Who is Eligible for the 0% Solar and Battery Loan in NSW?

You may be eligible if all the following apply:

  • The property is located in New South Wales.
  • You own the property as an owner-occupier or landlord.
  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Your combined annual taxable household income is no more than $210,000.
  • The property is not social or community housing and is not used for short-stay accommodation.
  • You meet the chosen finance provider’s credit assessment and ability-to-repay requirements.
  • The property and household have not already used the full Home Energy Saver loan limit.

Landlords: Eligible landlords can apply for upgrades to a NSW investment property. The provider will still assess residency, income, property and credit requirements.

Renters: Renters cannot apply for the loan. A separate Home Energy Saver discount is expected to become available to eligible renters with their landlord’s permission.

Strata properties: An eligible owner may apply, but the required strata or owners corporation approval must be obtained before the work proceeds.

Income eligibility is generally evidenced through the owners’ combined taxable household income, including a Notice of Assessment for the previous completed financial year. The final decision belongs to the selected finance provider.

What Solar and Battery Upgrades Can the Loan Cover?

For homeowners considering solar or battery upgrades, the most relevant eligible categories include rooftop solar, solar-and-battery packages, batteries added to existing solar systems, and eligible switchboard upgrades.

  • A new rooftop solar PV system, including approved panels and inverter equipment within the eligible installation.
  • A combined solar and home battery system.
  • An eligible home battery installed at a property that already has solar PV.
  • An eligible switchboard upgrade required to support the solar or battery installation.
  • The approved equipment and professional installation included in the supplier quote.

The wider program also lists heat-pump and solar water heaters, reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooktops, Level 2 EV chargers, ceiling fans, insulation, draught proofing, double glazing and a NatHERS assessment. A finance provider may offer a narrower product range at any given time, so confirm availability before relying on a quote.

The Equipment and Installer Still Need to Qualify

The program does not finance any product from any installer. The NSW loan guidelines set minimum technical, accreditation and consumer-protection standards.

  • Solar must be designed and installed by appropriately accredited Solar Accreditation Australia professionals and use approved components.
  • A battery must be installed and signed off by appropriately battery-accredited professionals, use approved components and be installed at a site with solar PV.
  • Eligible batteries must have more than 5 kWh usable capacity, be internet-connectable and capable of participating in a Virtual Power Plant.
  • The battery system must carry at least a 10-year warranty and guarantee at least 70% usable capacity retention at year 10.
  • Solar, battery and relevant EV upgrades must be purchased through a NETCC-approved supplier that is also approved by the selected finance provider for this program.

The guidelines also say the loan applies to the approved upgrade and its installation, not unrelated work required to prepare the property. Ask for any non-eligible or additional work to be shown separately so the total customer contribution is clear before you commit.

What Does 0% Interest Mean in Practical Terms?

At 0% interest, the loan balance does not grow through interest charges. If you borrowed $15,000 and repaid it evenly over 10 years, the simple monthly equivalent would be $125. A $10,000 loan over the same period would be about $83.33 per month.

Amount Borrowed 5-Year Monthly Equivalent 10-Year Monthly Equivalent
$5,000 $83.33 $41.67
$10,000 $166.67 $83.33
$15,000 $250.00 $125.00

Illustration only. Actual repayment frequency, term and amount are set by the finance provider. Rounding, missed-payment fees or other contract terms may affect the amount paid.

Current provider information indicates no establishment or ongoing account-keeping fees for this program. However, late-payment fees can apply and provider terms may change. Always rely on the credit contract and disclosure documents issued for your application.

Can the NSW Loan be Combined with Solar and Battery Rebates?

In many cases, yes. The loan and an upfront incentive do different jobs: a rebate or certificate-based discount reduces the quoted price, while the Home Energy Saver Loan can finance the remaining eligible amount.

Federal Solar and Battery Incentives

Eligible rooftop solar continues to receive Small-scale Technology Certificate support under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Eligible batteries installed with new or existing solar may also receive an upfront discount through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The battery discount is certificate-based and varies with usable capacity, installation date and the current program factor.

Under the NSW loan guidelines, relevant Commonwealth and NSW energy incentives should be applied before the Home Energy Saver loan amount is finalised. That can reduce the amount you need to borrow, provided the system meets every scheme’s eligibility rules. Read Solar Paradigm’s federal battery rebate guide for more background.

NSW Virtual Power Plant Incentive

An eligible battery may also qualify for the NSW Virtual Power Plant incentive. From 1 July 2026, batteries with capacity above 2 kWh and up to 50 kWh can be eligible, although the incentive calculation is capped at 28 kWh of usable capacity. Joining a VPP involves allowing an energy provider to control the battery at agreed times, so compare the payment, tariff, and control settings before signing.

Important: the separate $4,000 Home Energy Saver discount is not open yet

The NSW Government has also announced a Home Energy Saver discount of up to $4,000 for eligible lower-income households and certain concession card holders. As at 20 August 2026, discount applications are not yet open.

If your combined household income is up to $80,000 or someone in the household holds an eligible concession card, check the official Home Energy Saver page before accepting finance. The NSW Government recommends applying for the discount first if you want the discount and loan to support the same purchase. Taking the loan first may mean the later discount cannot be applied to that same upgrade.

How to Apply for the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan

The application pathway is designed to run through an approved supplier and participating finance provider.

  • Check household eligibility: Confirm property ownership, NSW location, residency status, combined taxable income and any exclusions.
  • Review the available incentives first: Check whether solar STCs, the federal battery discount, the future Home Energy Saver discount or a VPP incentive could apply.
  • Choose the right upgrade: Use your electricity bills, interval data, existing solar generation, evening consumption and backup priorities to size the system.
  • Get a quote from an approved supplier: The supplier must meet the selected finance provider’s program requirements. The quote should show equipment, installation, rebates, proposed loan amount and any customer contribution.
  • Complete the lender application: The approved supplier usually provides a referral link. You submit income, identity and credit information directly to the finance provider.
  • Wait for formal approval before proceeding: Read the loan agreement and installation contract, confirm exclusions and repayments, then approve the work.
  • Complete installation and handover: The supplier installs and commissions the system, provides warranties and compliance documents, and explains operation and maintenance.

Choose the System First, Then Choose the Finance

A 0% loan can improve cash flow, but it does not turn an oversized or poorly designed system into a good investment. Start with the home’s actual energy profile and the result you want.

  • Usage profile: How much electricity is used during the day, evening and overnight?
  • Existing solar: Is the array large enough to charge the proposed battery during most of the year?
  • Battery capacity and output: How many kWh are needed, and how much instantaneous power must the inverter supply?
  • Backup expectations: Essential circuits or whole-home backup; automatic or manual changeover; single-phase or three-phase?
  • Compatibility: Will the battery integrate cleanly with the existing inverter, meter and monitoring platform?
  • Switchboard and network requirements: Are upgrades or distribution-network approvals required, and are they included?
  • Warranty and service: Who handles product faults, monitoring issues and workmanship support after installation?
  • VPP choice: Is participation optional, what control will the provider have, and what payment or tariff applies?

If blackout protection is important, read our guide to battery blackout protection. Backup power is not automatic with every battery quote and may require specific inverter, gateway and switchboard design.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling the loan a rebate or grant. The principal must be repaid.
  • Assuming that NETCC approval alone is enough. The supplier must also be accepted by your selected finance provider for the program.
  • Choosing a battery only by kWh. Power output, compatibility, backup architecture and usable capacity matter as well.
  • Ignoring costs above the $15,000 cap. Any gap or non-eligible work must be paid separately.
  • Signing before checking the future $4,000 discount. If you may qualify and want it for the same purchase, follow the NSW Government’s application-order advice.
  • Believing 0% interest means no consequences for missed repayments. Late fees and credit impacts may still apply.
  • Accepting savings guarantees without a bill-based design. Actual savings vary with weather, consumption, tariffs, export limits, and system operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1Is the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan really interest-free?

Yes. The program offers 0% interest on approved loans. It is not a grant: you repay the amount borrowed. Read the finance provider’s contract for repayment frequency, late fees and other conditions.

2How much can I borrow for solar or a battery?

Eligible applicants may borrow up to $15,000 per property under the program. The approved amount and term depend on the project cost, eligibility and the provider’s credit assessment.

3How long do I have to repay the loan?

Repayment terms can be up to 10 years. The exact term and repayment schedule are set by Brighte or Plenti as part of the credit approval.

4Can I add a battery if I already have solar panels?

Yes, an eligible battery can be installed at a property with an existing solar PV system. The supplier should first confirm inverter compatibility, solar capacity, switchboard requirements and the battery’s program eligibility.

5Can I combine the loan with the federal battery discount?

Potentially, yes. Where all scheme rules are met, relevant federal or NSW incentives are applied to reduce the project cost before the remaining eligible amount is financed.

6What if my solar and battery project costs more than $15,000?

The loan can cover no more than the approved program limit. You must pay any difference and any non-eligible work separately. These amounts should be clear in the quote before you sign.

7Can landlords or renters apply?

Eligible landlords may apply for NSW investment properties. Renters cannot access the loan, although eligible renters may be able to access the separate Home Energy Saver discount when applications open and with their landlord’s permission.

8Can I choose any solar installer?

No. The supplier must meet the program standards and be approved by the selected finance provider. Solar and battery work must also meet the relevant NETCC, SAA, licensing, product and technical requirements.

9Does a financed battery automatically provide a blackout backup?

No. Blackout backup depends on the battery, inverter, gateway, switchboard and circuit design. Confirm whether the quote includes automatic backup, which circuits are protected, and whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage.

10Can I repay the loan early?

Early repayment rules are set by the finance provider. Brighte currently states that its Home Energy Saver loan can be repaid early without an early repayment fee. Confirm the current terms in your own credit contract.
